Some movers offer to pack your household as well as transport the contents. Others will take your already packed boxes and transport them to your new home. If you opt to pack your belongings before the movers arrive, read and apply these eight tips to make the process a little more organized: 1. Gather supplies ahead of time. You'll need plenty of boxes – various sizes – and plenty of packing tape. Clothing may be packed into heavy-duty garbage bags if your moving company allows. If you can, gather up extra socks, scarves, pillowcases and other small linens to use as padding. 2. Observe a fifty-pound limit for boxes, totes and other containers that you use to pack. Not only will this keep your boxes from collapsing, but those who pack the truck will thank you for not making the boxes too heavy! 3. Pack heavy items on the bottom of the boxes. This will prevent them from crushing any lighter items. For instance, you can pack a layer of hard cover books down below – weighing up to 30 pounds or so – and then pad the top with lighter items such as stuffed animals or children's toys. 4. Small items should be packed in small boxes or bags and sealed well before being put into larger boxes. This will keep them from migrating to the bottom where they could be crushed. It will also keep them organized and together. 5. If any of your furniture needs to be taken apart before packing, be sure that you tape the screws to the frame. You can put them together in a plastic bag or small box and tape that to the frame to keep them together. This way, you'll have everything you need to put the furniture back together in your new home. 6. Along that same line, keep a screwdriver handy, whether you put it in the glove compartment of your car or attach it to a piece of furniture. If you get to your new home late at night, you'll probably want to set up the beds right away. Knowing the location of the screwdriver will be crucial! 7. Keep clothing inside dresser drawers to cut down on boxes. There's no reason that you can't leave the dresser drawers full of light clothing items. You movers may opt to take the drawers out as they take the dresser to the truck and then replace them one by one. 8. Label your boxes as you pack. Write the name of the room where the items belong. If you pack items that you'll need right away, label the box "unload first." That way your movers will know to pack it last so you can have immediate access when the truck reaches your new home.
