The TaylorMade SLDR driver succeeds the R1 driver and there are a lot of significant changes from the previous model. Now with the SLDR driver, the moveable weights in the heel and toe and the dial on the sole have been replaced with a single sliding weight in the 460cc titanium head. This reduces the weight of the SLDR driver and makes it lighter so that in theory you get more clubhead speed from the same amount of effort. They have also moved the centre of gravity (CG) closer to the face which also increases ball speed, although this can also increase dispersion and reduce accuracy. The key thing is that I was able to achieve this with a 10.5° driver compared to my current 9.5° driver, which should be the other way around as usually more loft gives more spin rather than less. Although it is showing a gain of only 3 yards in total distance, the average distance shown with the SLDR hides a couple of 280 yard shots so the theory does work in practice. The TaylorMade R1 driver feels more forgiving and the sound at impact is a loud, but strangely likeable, high pitched crash that forcefully announces that you are on the tee and have just pulverised the ball. The 460cc head features a wide deep forgiving face that should benefit all mid to low handicappers. The aerodynamics of have been improved through the use of a thick/thin crown and it seems to make the R1 driver feel a bit more lively than the Taylormade R11s driver. There are also a 13 and 1 gram weight in each side of the sole for you to further tinker with the weight distribution to fine tune the left to right shot shape of your R1 driver. These are positioned slightly lower on the sole of the R1 than before, to lower the centre of gravity and and reduce spin. Overall, the TaylorMade R1 driver is pricey but the sound, feel, forgiveness and loft options are all top drawer and in our opinion this is one of the better drivers. The performance of the R1 driver is excellent.
