(Xinhua Photo) ATHENS, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Greece was almost paralyzed Saturday by a new series of strikes and demonstrations. Labor unions organized marches across the country against austerity measures and the EU-IMF support mechanism for the Greek economy, ending in minor violence in Athens. According to unconfirmed information, two protesters were slightly injured and police arrested about 20 people. Tens of thousands of Greek citizens took to the streets of Athens and major cities to protest cutbacks on salaries, raises in taxes, reforms to the pension system and a new package of more harsh measures expected to be announced in the following hours. According to Greek media reports, the government concluded negotiations with eurozone partners and the IMF over financial assistance to exit a debt crisis that has spread worries across Europe in exchange for further austerity measures. Holding banners denouncing the Greek Stability and Growth Program, the government, the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, and chanting slogans such as “Take the measures back” and “We will not pay for the crisis others caused”, the protesters marched in front of the parliament and the American embassy in Athens. During the two separate massive rallies organized by umbrella public sector union ADEDY, private sector counterpart GSEE and labor unions close to the two Left parties in parliament, minor clashes between young anarchists and police were reported at Syntagma square in front of the parliament and at the old University of Athens nearby. After the protests ended, groups of young hooded people hurled rocks and molotovs at police, who answered with teargas at Exarchia, a central Athens district that has been the scene of many violent incidents in the past few years, particularly after the fatal shooting of a teenager by police in December 2008. Setting dustbins and bus stops on fire and breaking windows of banks and a hotel, they created an image of chaos, albeit on a small scale. A similar group of youths attacked, mostly verbally, the ex President of the Greek Parliament, Apostolos Kaklamanis, who was taken to hospital to be treated for the shock.
