Diwali, also called Deepavali, is the Indian festival of lights. It is an important and much celebrated festival in India. Most Indians celebrate the home coming of Lord Rama after a fourteen year exile in the forests. They light an array of lamps to commemorate this occasion. The word ‘deep’ means clay lamp and ‘avali’ means an array. The celebration of the festival signifies the victory of good over evil within oneself. The word Diwali is actually a corruption of the Sanskrit term Deepavali. Today it is celebrated by Sikhs, Jains, Hindus, and even some Buddhists all around the globe.

Actually, Diwali is celebrated over a period of five days in many parts of India. These days include Dhanteras, Naraka Chadurdashi, Lakshmi Puja, Govardhana Puja, and Bhai Duj. Most of these days are celebrated with much gaiety and fervour with traditional customs and manners. On these days, people exchange greetings and gifts between themselves and their beloved family members, relatives, and friends to commemorate the festival. A wide variety of Diwali gifts are available online as well as in the markets. Let us take a peek into what is available to celebrate Diwali with an array of gifts.

Sweets On this occasion people gift sweets that are available in traditional Indian sweets stores. These sweets like mithais, pedas, barfi, rass gulla, gulab jamun, kaju rolls, pista rolls, and many others are conveniently available.

Jewellery Jewellery is a much sought after item in India during Diwali. They comprise of various traditional patterns and designs. Purchasing jewellery is considered extremely auspicious, especially on Dhanteras and Lakshmi Puja.

Apparel A few days before Diwali, it is considered very customary to buy new sets of clothes. Families throng markets to purchase new clothes for their children and themselves. It is also considered very traditional to gift people and other children with new clothes and traditional garments.
