LUSAKA, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- The electoral commission in Zambia has offered an explanation regarding the late start in announcing the results of general elections held on Tuesday. Both local and foreign journalists, election observers and political party representatives spent the whole night waiting for the start of the announcement of presidential results at the Totaling Center at Mulungushi International Conference Center but without any announcement of the results. Cris Akufuna, the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Public Relations Manager, said the delay is because they have not received full results from all constituencies. While acknowledging that they have received results from some polling stations within the 150 constituencies, Akufuna said they have not received total results for each constituency, making it difficult to start announcing. "We have received results from all parts of Zambia but no totals for each constituency. Immediately we receive totals from constituencies, we will start giving out the results," Akufuna said during an update at the Totaling Center. He said the results could only be announced after total results for a particular constituency are received. "We are watching what is happening in all the 150 constituencies and immediately a constituency is complete we will release the results," he added. Counting of votes has dragged on throughout the nigh in most parts of the country and continued until the early hours of Wednesday, according to local televisions. Zambians voted during the tripartite elections to choose a president, lawmakers and local government leaders. The governing Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has been in power since 1991. Final results will only be expected on Thursday.
