4 Reasons Not to DIY on Vacation

Travel & Tourism,Consumer
Whether it’s a Canada cruise or an African safari, the number one reason travelers try to DIY is to save money. It’s good to be a savvy, financially fit traveler—but what does missing out on a tour really cost you? Unless you’re incredibly familiar with the area, which is unlikely, you simply don’t know the best spots, can’t score the kind of discounts travel companies have access to and you might be putting yourself in dangerous situations. In other words, tours exist for a reason—make use of them.

Planning a vacation tour, or even a series of them, is one of the best ways to make the most of any vacation. In fact, there are some destinations where the only way to access one of a kind hotspots is with a tour guide. Trying to piece together your own tour from books, message boards or friends is iffy at best. The information can be outdated, it might not be the best route available and of course everyone has different preferences with travel.

If you’re still on the fence, here are the biggest reasons not to do a DIY tour plan for your next trip:

1. You’re Not Saving

In fact, you might end up spending more because tour companies have negotiated with vendors to ensure the lowest possible pricing. You’re already getting a bargain with a tour company, and in many countries it’s normal for locals to charge a higher price for tourists. Any money you could potentially save (such as renting a car in a developing country as opposed to getting on a tour bus) can be dangerous—especially if you don’t know all the rules of the road.

2. You’re Putting Yourself in a Sticky Situation

With a reputable tour company, you have guarantees, insurance and they’ve done this numerous times so the itinerary is down pat. If you go at it alone, there’s no telling what might happen. Yes, it could be perfectly safe, but what happens if there’s a problem? What do you do when it’s just you, or just you and a travel buddy stuck on a dirt road with a flat tire on a subpar rental car and no phone reception? It’s better to play it safe.

3. You’ll Miss Out

Any destination that’s worth seeing and safe will be covered by a tourist company—after all, that’s their job. If you really want to go off the beaten path and there’s no tour company that offers an itinerary for the adventure you want, that’s a good enough reason to DIY. If you have FOMO (fear of missing out), what you should really be concerned about is missing out on what a tour company can provide, like exclusive access to the best attractions.

4. You’re Stressing over Nothing

Have you ever tried to plan a tour in a country you’ve never been to, where you don’t speak the language and where it’s nearly impossible to get concrete information? It can quickly turn the trip of a lifetime into a nightmare. Let the experts take care of the details for you so that you can kick back and relax.

Trying to DIY with a tour is like reinventing the wheel. You’re simply not going to make a tire from scratch better than companies who have been perfecting the process for decades. Relax and let the professionals take care of it.
