The Benefits of Buying Used Auto Parts

Automotive,Consumer
The benefits of buying used auto parts are many, not the least of which are financial. Many consumers shy away from purchasing used-car components, but you should rethink this “tainted goods” perspective. Used parts, if chosen judiciously, can help the environment as well as save you money. Below are some compelling reasons for considering a used item the next time you need a part. Also included are some handy tips for which parts you can rely on and which ones you may want to avoid.

The Cost Benefit of Used Auto Parts

The cost of auto parts is on the rise. In many cases, a perfectly serviceable used replacement will set you back half (or less) than what a new version costs. This can be especially helpful if the new part you need must be ordered or has a long lead time. If purchased from a “you pick” location (where you must remove the part yourself), the cost can be even less.

Salvaged vehicles may be declared a total loss by insurance companies for a bent frame or simply because the value of the vehicle does not justify expensive body repairs. In these cases, mechanical components are often fully intact, compromised only by virtue of the car’s mileage. If your vehicle is older, chances are that the parts you require are no longer made, meaning you must find a workable substitute. Salvaged vehicles are an affordable resource for locating the parts you need.

Environmental Benefits of Used Car Parts

This overlooked benefit is almost as compelling as the potential cost savings. Salvaged vehicles and their components end up in landfills, despite having many recyclable parts. By purchasing these items, you are extending their life and reducing the need for new raw materials and industrial manufacturing. Chances are your local salvage yard is a family owned and operated business and, by patronizing these establishments, you are contributing to the well-being of your area’s local economy.

Which Used Auto Parts Are Safe to Buy

The key to successfully choosing a used component is knowing which ones to avoid. Some items are never a good choice, especially if safety is involved. These include air bags and sensors, batteries, some brake components, fuel lines and radiator hoses. Others are safe to use in most cases, including air compressors, alternators, CPUs, engine blocks and fuel injectors. The viability of any part that wears out based on mileage will depend on how long it was used and the degree to which it was maintained properly. Other parts that are not mileage-dependent are almost always safe. These include body components, cooling fans, exhaust manifolds, wheels, fuel tanks and oil pans. You may be surprised to learn that many auto repair shops safely use refurbished parts for routine repairs.

For the best gently used car parts, find a local wrecking yard in your area. Many salvage companies even have searchable databases listing which vehicles and parts are available. Remember also that not all salvaged cars have been involved in an accident. Individuals and groups often donate their vehicles to salvage yards. Expensive auto parts are meant to last. Before you buy a pricey new part for your next repair, check out the benefits of buying used auto parts first.
