Lake Wallenpaupack has a great history behind it. In addition to being a great place to raise a family, it is also a wonderful place to visit. There is an abundance of activities to do in every season of the year. If you are looking to buy Lake Wallenpaupack property, here is a quick history lesson for you so you can better understand how this lake came to be. - The land was originally owned by William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania. He gave it to his son, who sold it to one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. From there, it was settled and several towns would sprout up where the lake would eventually be.
- The lake is man-made. The dam was built as a hydro-electric plant by the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company in 1927. It would take the lake 7 months to fill up once the dam was completed. Some houses were left and could be seen in the lake as it was filling up.
- PP&L owned the lake until 2014, when they sold it to Talen Energy. One year later, in 2015, it was sold again to Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners. This sale was completed in 2016. Since the power companies own the land surrounding the lake, homeowners with lake access must request permits to make changes to the landscaping around their homes.
The Lenape Indians named the area Wallenpaupack, which means “the stream of swift and slow water.” This name seems especially fitting for the area now that the lake is there. It is an area with plenty to do and some exciting history as well. If you want a location that will keep your family busy year round, you should definitely buy Lake Wallenpaupack property. While keeping you busy, life on and around the lake will also provide you with plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy nature as well.
