Paying for car repairs is never fun, but some repairs are less fun than others! While many auto repairs won’t break the bank, some can really take a bite out of your wallet. According to AAA, car owners should expect to pay about $0.05 per mile driven each year in car maintenance and repairs. For a someone who travels about 15,000 miles per year in a sedan, that translates to about $750 per year, or $62.50 per month. Whether you visit an auto transmission repair shop or your dad’s garage for car maintenance, here are some of the most expensive car repairs. Busted Head Gasket Your car’s head gasket seals an engine and stops coolant, oil, and other fluids from leaking into places where they shouldn’t be. When a car’s gasket breaks, the vehicle’s coolant can’t do its job. That means an overheated engine and potentially other major repairs. Though the cost of a gasket isn’t terribly high, labor on this repair can add up quickly. The average head gasket repair costs between $1,200 and $1,600. Blown Motor If your car’s engine blows, it may be time to consider a new vehicle. Depending on the age of the car and the mileage of the car’s other parts, it may be worth a driver’s time to purchase a new set of wheels rather than spend the money to replace a car’s engine. Engines don’t typically blow on newer cars. On an older vehicle or a car with more than 150,000 miles, fixing the engine won’t renew other vital parts. A new engine can cost as much as $4,000, and that doesn’t include the cost of labor. Transmission Replacement Most transmission failures are the result of problems with transmission fluid. Knowing the cause of the damage, however, doesn’t make the fix any less expensive. Typically, a driver will pay between $1,800 and $3,500 to replace a transmission. To prevent this kind of damage to your vehicle, take your car to an auto transmission repair shop to have your transmission fluid checked and changed at least every other year.
