So You Want to Be a Graphologist

Education
Your handwriting contains a lot of information about you. A graphologist in San Diego is well-trained to identify not only the author of a handwritten note or document, but to also determine the mental state of the writer at the time he or she penned the document. The field of graphology is quite interesting and, if you’re an analytical thinker, you may enjoy a profitable career in this industry. Here are some things you should know if you want to pursue this career.

Day-to-Day Duties of a Graphologist

A graphologist looks at handwriting samples and identifies the following:
  • Noting the strokes of the writer
  • Measuring the slant and height of letters
  • Observing the pressure of the writer (this helps the graphologist determine the writer’s emotional state or his or her energy at the time of writing)
  • Interpret all observations using correct theory and handwriting analysis techniques
Graphologists, also known as handwriting experts, are often employed by criminal justice agencies for a number of reasons. These professionals are also employed by corporations to determine the strength of a person’s candidacy for a job and by insurance companies who may want to decide the authenticity of a suicide note.

Individuals interested in this kind of career should exhibit the following traits:

  • Analytical skills
  • Critical thinking
  • Pay close attention to detail
  • Enjoy writing reports

Work Hours

The hours that handwriting experts work depend on the industry they work in. Experts who work for criminal justice agencies, insurance companies, and corporations may work a normal 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. job. However, many graphologists opt to work in a freelance mode. As a freelance graphologist, these individuals have more control over the hours they work, the type of clients they work with, and can take home more money if they develop a strong client base.

Salary

How much can a handwriting expert make? Entry-level pay can begin around $54,000 a year with salaries topping out around $69,000. Of course, salary is dependent on several factors such as industry, area of the country, and experience.

Entry-level graphologists jobs are often sought by individuals who have received a degree in one of the following fields of studies:

  • Criminology
  • Psychology
  • Sociology

Law

Individuals with an interest in forensic handwriting analysis will get certified in graphology after graduating with one of those degrees.

As noted earlier, if you work as a freelancer, you have more control over what you make. Also, working for private corporations that are not part of the criminal justice system will work in your advantage if you want to make more money. Top graphologists can clear 6-figures if they are well-trained, have a high authority in their industry, and choose their clients well.

Does a career in graphology still sound exciting to you? If so, make sure you do your research and find the best schools that offer extensive certifications in handwriting analysis. The more training and experience you have the more in demand your services will be. Before you know it, you could be a world-famous graphologist in San Diego with a client list that includes high-profile clients.
