Both commercial and residential properties can be affected by severe weather or rolling brown outs. If the power outage is predicted to be long, residents can rent a generator to provide electricity for a short period of time. There are three factors to consider when deciding on a generator. Power Output Generators come in various sizes that can generate different amounts of power. These can range from small, hand held generators to large capacity generators to power a hospital or office building. As a rule, the larger the generator, the more power it generates. A rental consultant will help add up all the wattage being used in a home and recommend a particular generator. They will often recommend a generator with a little higher capacity to account for any appliances the homeowner may have forgotten. Gas or Diesel Rental generators by their nature are not permanent, so they are powered by a combustion engine. Permanent generators are powered by natural gas that is directly fed through gas pipes. There are a few styles of generator that will work off of a tank of propane or natural gas. A portable generator is either powered by gasoline for smaller units or diesel fuel for the large ones. Diesel fuel will produce significantly more power but often costs more than gasoline. And gasoline is easily available at any gas station. Special Features There are a few safety features that should be on a rental generator to keep everyone in the house safe. Some sort of circuit breaker system should be present so the generator does not get overloaded and fail to work. Included in the breakers should be a ground fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI, system. This will trip the outlet when any part of the electrical circuit is exposed to water. And, the generator should automatically shut down when the gas or diesel gets too low. In general, a portable generator needs to be portable. It should be designed to be moved easily and quickly. The small ones should have a handle while the giant units should be secured to a trailer. And, they should be connected quickly to the home’s power supply. A portable generator can carry a family through when their power is down for a long time. But, they should not rush their decision. When they rent a generator, homeowners should take their time to get the right one.
