No one plans to be stuck on the side of the road, but sometimes it happens. When it does, it's important that you know what to do if you need an Atlanta tow truck. Here are some suggestions you should follow if something goes wrong with your car as you're driving down the highway. Flat Tire If you have a flat while driving down the highway, be aware that driving on it can destroy the tire. Never try to change the tire if it is on the same side of the road as the traffic flow. Only change it if it's on the side opposite the highway, and only if you are absolutely certain you can do so safely. Get Off the Road At the first sign of a problem with your car, move toward the side of the road. If you need to change lanes, be sure to signal your intention and watch the traffic around you. Remove your foot from the accelerator, brake gently to move out of traffic, and ease onto the shoulder. Once you have the car safely off the road, make sure it's visible to other drivers. It's important they know it isn't moving. If the incident occurs during the day, turn on your emergency blinkers. If it's dark, turn on the interior lights. If you can't turn the interior lights on manually, then open the car door that's away from the flow of traffic and leave it open. Call for Help It's time to call for help. If you have some type of emergency roadside assistance service, call them, or call the highway patrol. If you don't have a cell phone, look for an emergency call box nearby. If there is no call box in sight, then raise the car's hood and tie something white to the radio antenna or hang it out a window. This will signal that you need help. Stay in the car with the doors locked. Interstate highways and major roads are regularly patrolled so watch for police or call 511 select option "1" to request HERO motorist assistance. If someone other than a uniformed officer or HERO, who wear an assigned uniform which readily identifies them as a Georgia DOT Incident Management Technician, stops to help, roll the window down slightly and ask that they call for help. While You Wait Collect your belongings while you're waiting for the tow truck to come. Make sure you have your wallet and, if you have one, your cell phone. Since you don't know how long your car may be in the shop, gather any belongings or work items you might need. Remember to stay on guard and stay safe. Although there are some Good Samaritans out there, you need to be cautious of others while you wait. Once the tow truck arrives, before you get out of your vehicle, confirm that the Atlanta tow truck belongs to the tow service you called and the driver is the one you are expecting.
