If you're planning a central Florida fishing charter, here are 10 questions you'll want to ask and some tips to help you make your charter a successful one. Questions to Ask - Is experience necessary? If not, will instruction be provided for first-time participants?
- Is the captain licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard?
- Does the charter specialize in a particular type of fishing?
- What type of boat will be used?
- What is the itinerary for the day?
- How much deposit is required to reserve a charter?
- How much advance notice is required for a reservation?
- What is the complete price breakdown of all costs, including gratuities?
- What is their cancellation policy due to inclement weather?
- What do we need to bring with us?
Tips for a Successful Charter - Listen to the captain and crew
- Change your bait often if you are using live bait.
- Tip the crew appropriately. You tip someone for pouring you a cup of coffee and providing good service. It's appropriate to also tip someone who helped you enjoy a day out on the water fishing.
- There are no guarantees. Regardless of the outcome, enjoy your time on the water.
What to Expect When you get on the boat, ask where they would like you to keep your personal items. The deck gets wet and you may have items you prefer to keep dry, and the crew needs to be able to move around free from obstacles. Pay attention to the rules for the trip and to where safety equipment is stored. Find an open spot on the rail and wait until instructed to drop a line. Listen to the crew, do what they say, and have fun! A central Florida fishing charter can be a wonderful way to spend time on the water. Just remember, it's fishing, which doesn't always mean catching.
