There’s a saying I once heard when it comes to buying cars.

And that is this (In paraphrased form):

The best time to buy a car is when you don’t need one.

There’s one main reason why that is, and the answer is in the statement itself.

Neediness.

And this applies to any kind of sales situation from a buyer’s perspective. When you’re needy, or desperate in extreme cases, you can’t afford to wait and be patient with negotiating. And when salespeople sense that, especially the shady ones, you bet they’re going to take advantage of that situation.

Overall, it never puts you in a good situation.

When it comes to social situations, people see that as an unattractive trait, whether it’s dating people or doing business with others.

Speaking from personal experience, I’ve met a lot of needy people who are in the multi-level marketing business.

Which reminds me of a story.

Back when I interned at a startup non-profit, I gained quite a bit of HR and recruiting experience. So I attended a college internship fair as a recruiter and networked with other companies representatives. One person I met was working with a MLM company, and I thought he was a great guy.

At the end of the day, he gave me a call and basically tried to poach me. At the time, I didn’t realize that’s what he was trying to do. Of course, the Executive Director wasn’t happy and wanted to talk to him. He even put him on speaker so I could follow along.

Long story short:

When the MLM guy got rejected, he went full-on sales pitch mode and started talking non-stop. The Director had to call his name five times, raising his voice each time, before he shut his mouth.

As soon as we hung up the phone, we ripped up his business card and threw it in the trash.

If that doesn’t show a person’s neediness, then I don’t know what does.

Which brings me to this.

I had a virtual coffee chat with a Facebook employee and we got into the topic of networking. And she said the best time to build your network is when you don’t need to.
