At a Glance: The Best Designer Glasses for You

Fashion & Cosmetics

If you’re a spectacle wearer, you’ll know the pain of choosing a pair of frames that are not only fashionable, but that perfectly suit your face shape. The task of selecting a pair of high-quality designer glasses is even more difficult if circumstances don’t allow you the luxury of a second opinion from a friend or family member to help you. While you should always make use of the expertly trained staff at your local opticians, understanding which basic styles suit you will help you eliminate some immediately, saving you a lot of time and angst in your quest for the best designer glasses for you.

What’s your Face Shape?

There are four basic shapes: round, oval, square and heart. While for some people the answer is obvious, for others it might be a little more difficult to discern.

The first thing to do is take a proper look in the mirror – and if you’ve got long hair that means pulling it right back so you can see clearly. If you can tell straight away what shape your face is, that’s great, but if you need a little more help, here’s the basic idea:

  • A square face is wide at both the jawline and the forehead.
  • A heart-shape will be widest at the cheekbones and then narrow down toward the chin.
  • A round face is, well, round.
  • An oval has wide cheeks and is longer than it is wide, as the name suggests.

Now, to the Style

Once you understand your individual face shape, it becomes a lot easier to narrow down your selection of frames. Of course, we all know rules are made to be broken in some cases, but generally the following rings true and should guide you.

Square: For you, the aim is to counteract the hard angles, so the rounder styles of designer glasses will look great and really slim down and flatter your face. Cats-eye frames will bring attention to your eyes and away from the wider parts of your visage, while bold, geometric frames can be both fashionable and striking.

Heart: You have quite a wide selection that will suit, but the aim of the game is to balance out a narrow, pointy chin. While you want to stay away from semi-rimmed styles, you’ll look good in thin-rimmed, rounded or angular frames, including cats-eye.

Round: It stands to reason that if you choose a round style it’ll emphasise a round face, so go for square or rectangular frames to counteract. Again, the good old, often-overlooked, cats-eye looks great on a round face.

Oval: Lucky you, because you can pretty much wear any shape of designer glasses and look good! Round, square, bold, geometric, cats-eye – take your pick. The only thing to steer away from are the very small frames.

So, there you have it – your guide to choosing the best designer glasses in a nutshell. If you remember these very simple rules of thumb, with the help of your local opticians, choosing a new pair of spectacles will be much more straightforward and far less stressful.
