The Different Physical Characteristics of a Soil

Business,Business Opportunities,Research

Knowing the condition of your soil is considered to be a very important part in agriculture. You  need to know  the soil composition and what is a good soil and a bad soil. That way you will be able  to determine the real condition of your soil. And by doing that you can optimise the growing conditions of your plants/crops and earn more.

Using a soil moisture meter can help you minimise the risk of under watering or over watering your plants. But before you can do that, you need to be familiar with your soil by learning a few things about it.

  • What is a soil? - Soil is typically a mixture of inorganic and organic particles.
  • a. inorganic - this soil is mineral based and  comes from rocks that are broken down into tiny pieces over a long period of time.

    b. organic - it contains carbon substances that come from dead  animals, insects, microbes and plants.

  • Soil Texture - it is how you can see and feel the soil. This is determined by the size and type of particles that make up the soil ( mostly referring to the inorganic materials).
  • Soil Structure - it is the arrangement of the soil particles into larger pile of different sizes and shapes as well as the pore spaces that are left between the soil. It is into these pore spaces that the root hairs will grow and  will extract the water and oxygen from the soil.
  • a. good  soil structure for plant growth - it has a stable aggregates between 0.5 and 2mm in diameter.

    b. sandy soils - aggregate stability is often hard to maintain because of low organic matter.

    c. clay soil - aggregate is so large, resulting to insufficient pore spaces that allow root hairs to grow between them.

  • Soil Moisture -  the amount of water in the soil  which is usually described in percentage
  • Soil Tension - refers to how hard the plant’s root has to work to extract water from the soil
  • Soil Moisture Content in the Field - is a measure of suction, and the correct way to refer to it is minus or negative X kPa
  • a. Measurement Units-  refers to the volume of water in a given volume of soil

    b. Irrigation Scheduling- the artificial application of water to the land or soil Indeed having a good soil structure can contribute to the health of both the soil and the plant, thus allows good water and air movement into the soil. Therefore, it is better for you to monitor the physical characteristics of the soil on a regular basis and understand its soil condition to ensure that you are able to grow a healthy crop.

Once you already know your soil type and condition, you can now  have a good harvest and you can also  maximise your future profit!
