Capacity of NI-MH battery (also call Nickel-metal hydride battery), the same as that of other rechargeable batteries’, is the most important performance parameter. Usually battery capacity means the capacity that a battery discharge from a certain voltage to another set voltage under certain discharge conditions. The IEC61436 standard specifies that a battery rated capacity is the capacity it releases with current of 0.2C to a certain voltage of 1V after charged with current of 0.1C for 16 hours under a rated temperature of 20±5 ?. NiMH battery capacity unit is mAh.
Capacity of NI-MH battery, including nimh rechargeable battery, is determined by its materials and structures. The rated capacity of IEC standard is the theoretical capacity and no battery capacity can surpass the theoretical rated capacity anyway. With increase of using time and discharge times, battery capacity will irreversible decrease.
NI-MH batteries with the same structure have the same specific capacity. Specific capacity refers to the capacity a battery releases per unit volume or weight. Therefore, for NiMH batteries with the same brand, the heavier or bigger the battery is, the more capacity it has. For example, capacity of an aa NI-MH battery of a particular brand is always larger than an aaa NI-MH battery of the same brand.
There is some fake high-capacity battery in the market. Among the same type of batteries of different brands, the total output power (current times voltage) of high-capacity ones is much larger than the ordinary ones because high-capacity ones adopts polymer materials with AB2 electrode structure(A represents titanium and vanadium, B represents zirconium and nickel). The largest difference between high capacity battery and ordinary batteries is the content of rare earth elements. Ordinary batteries are with AB5 electrode structure composed by more rare earth elements.
It is clear that if there is no polymer materials in a battery, its theoretical capacity is impossible to be improved. Some Ni-MH battery manufacturers in the market declare that their batteries are with high capacity but they actually plays a trick that replacing initial capacity with rated capacity. They increase raw materials that can increase initial capacity and reduce raw materials that can steady the electrode. For such products, their capacity will decrease rapidly after using for dozens of times. On the contrary, those batteries with lower initial capacity still has stable performance.
In the civilian market, a number of domestic battery manufacturers, like Vinnic batteries, have rapid development and some of their technologies and products have reach international advanced level. As for single Ni-MH battery, the common AA-size one can reach a capacity of 1600 mAh, and AAA-size one can reach a capacity of 900 mAh.
