The All-American Snack Flavored potato chips and snacks, often strange by American standards have long been a favorite overseas. Potato Wafers, Wedges, and French Fries have become an indispensable eatery of this generation. A potato chip (known as a crisps/chips in American, Canadian, Singaporean, African and wafer in Indian sub-continent) is an ultra-thin slice of potato that is deep fried or baked until crisp. Potato chips are commonly served as an appetizer, side dish, or snack. The basic chips are cooked and salted; additional varieties are manufactured using various flavorings and ingredients including seasonings, herbs, cheese, spices and artificial additives. People love munching on various flavors of Chips, while gossiping, watching TV and even while the sports-bug strikes. With the usher of the IPL this season, Lays seems to have come up with a few brand new flavors which give the people something new to choose from. In an idea originated by the Smiths Potatoes Chips Company Ltd, formed in 1920, Frank Smith originally packaged a twist of salt with his crisps in grease-proof paper bags, which were then sold around London. Potato chips were originally fried and seasoned without concern for trans-fat, Sodium, and other not-so-good ingredients. The potato chip remained otherwise unseasoned until an innovation by Joe "Spud" Murphy (1923–2001), the owner of an Irish crisp company called Tayto who developed a technology to add seasoning during manufacture in the 1950s. After some trial and error, Murphy and his employee, Seamus Burke, produced the world's first seasoned crisps: Cheese & Onion; Barbecue; and Salt and Vinegar. Some potato chip companies have responded to the criticism by investing in research and development to modify existing recipes and create health-conscious products. Kettle Food was founded in 1978 and currently sells only trans fat-free products, including potato chips. PepsiCo research shows that approximately 80% of salt on chips is not sensed by the tongue before being swallowed. Frito-Lay spent $414 million in 2009 on product development, including development of salt crystals that would reduce the salt content of Lay's potato chips without adversely affecting flavor. The various flavors of Potato chips tickle the taste buds and give the consumer, a joy of self-elation. Lays have done remarkably well on the front of flavoring/seasoning of these chip-pieces. Lay’s recently introduced three new chip flavors that were about as far away from the classic BBQ, Sour Cream & Onion and Salt and Vinegar varieties than one could imagine. Spanning the globe for taste combinations, Lay’s unleashed chips flavored with regional-American food favorite Chicken & Waffles, Cheesy Garlic Bread and finally Sriracha, a Thai chili sauce. They have localized the concept of seasoning/flavoring and that is the prime reason for it to be a global-baby. That's why we at BookyourTable see this as one of our favorite snack.
