Preparing for Disaster Through the Red Cross

Last month I signed up to become a catastrophe mental health counselor for the Red Cross. I had a 'feeling' that many modifications were afoot, and as Japan's disaster has actually unfolded, I feel really honored to now be pursuing training to help neighborhoods with the skills I need to offer. Your local chapter also provides cost-free catastrophe preparation classes, and we will be having one in Seattle this month.

Natural and man-made disasters can strike at any time. In being prepared, we are much better able to cope if and when they must take place. The basics of catastrophe readiness as the Red Cross suggests include the following:. This information is gathered from cpr training seattle.

1. Have a Supply kit:. - Water-one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home). - Food-non-perishable, easy-to-prepare products (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home). - Flashlight. - Hand-crank or battery-powered radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible). - Additional batteries. - Emergency treatment kit. - Medicines (7-day supply) and clinical products. - Multipurpose device. - Sanitation and personal hygiene products. - Copies of individual documents (medication list and important clinical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, tickets, birth certifications, insurance policies). - Cellular phone with chargers. - Household and emergency contact information. - Bonus money. - Emergency blanket. - Map(s) of the area.

2. Make a strategy: Meet family members and discuss what your evacuation plan would be. Pick a non-emergency from the location individual as a contact in case your cellular phone or neighborhood lines are obstructed. Brainstorm possible circumstances.

3. Discover exactly what catastrophes or emergencies may happen in your location. These events can range from those influencing only you and your family, like a home fire or medical emergency, to those influencing your whole neighborhood, like an earthquake or flood.

4. Have at least one person in your household discover fundamental emergency treatment and CPR.

5. Discover a self-soothing method such as Reiki. You can put it in your emergency kit, and have it 'ready to go' if you or somebody requires a way to calm down, readjust from shock, etc. up until medical assistance is available.

Disasters, by their very nature, are turbulent occasions. They trigger disruption and damage. But if we are much better ready and mindful, the effect can be much less. These are altering times and require us to take a serious look at how we can deal with the things that could come our means. Not out of fear, but with confidence in abilities and resources. This is where we start.
