Metalizing is a process in which Metals with lower melting points are sprayed as droplets which later combine to make a coating over a surface. The heated Metal is projected on a receiving surface using an air blast. The method is used to protect steelwork by ways such as zinc spraying upon a steel hull. It may also be used to repair worn out parts of machinery e.g. spraying stainless steel over worn out turbo-pump shafts. For this process, a Metalizing Gun is used. Composition of a Metalizing Gun:
It consists of a thin walled steel container to store the liquid Metal. The liquid Metal in turn is enveloped in a massive block. The block is made up of an alloy which is thermally conductive, containing a temperature sensor and an element providing electrical heating. The metal’s outer side helps in raising air ducts that are used for conveying heat to the block. The air ducts are also linked with the spray nozzle. Applications of Metalizing: - Metalizing is used in steel structures such as offshore oil platforms, dam gates and locks, bridges, power transmission or communication poles, pipelines and shore and pier facilities.
- The process makes use of the Metalizing Gun in dentistry whereby metal is sprayed on the plaster impressions before being filled with plaster, specifically plastic plaster in order to produce working models.
