The privacy laws in the UAE have recently come up with rules for local retailers to curtail the use of mannequins. Initially, a specialized mannequin making industry came up with life sized mannequins which are equipped with spy cameras to spy on visitors and shoppers with the help of a new face profiling technology. The system aims at helping retailers to be more informed on the types of customers they receive and to keep an eye on shoplifting. But since the UAE does not have any stipulated privacy law which is dedicated to protect data, a number of cybercrimes could take place due to such activities. Therefore, it is considered and offense to capture an image without a person’s preference in the UAE. The sanction of imprisonment for this crime is nothing less than six months and the fine to be paid for the same is more than Dh 150,000 and for infringing the privacy of a person by using information technology, IT devices and other electronic information systems other than those permitted by the law can lead to a fine of more than Dh 500,000. Sharjah, one of the seven emirates of the UAE has legally banned the display of mannequins with indecent and revealing clothes in all stores. This was highly enforced by the local religious authorities. Following this, they completely banned the display of mannequins in the apparel and accessories stores of Sharjah. This religious edict was passed by the defence of consumers department in the municipality of Sharjah. This rule, which is enforced according to the code of conduct of the city, mainly aims at protecting the public morals of people. Since the region is one of the most conservative emirate of the UAE, their code vehemently prohibits women from wearing transparent and tight clothes and men wearing shorts. Therefore, the mannequins displaying such clothes were immediately removed. Also, across the UAE, mannequins which display skimpy clothes and lingerie are completely banned as an anti-rape measure. The municipal authority has commissioned this rule of banning scantily clad mannequins outside stores in the UAE. The rule mainly aims at preventing disgrace to women by such displays and to prevent men from getting provoked by such mannequins. Therefore, retailers of apparel stores in the UAE must come up with different methods of marketing their products since the banning of mannequins. Initially, the production used to sell more than a few dozens of mannequins to many of their end users in the UAE.
