Finest creations of the finest weavers, Patola have become the brand ambassadors of India.

The most traditional and astounding creation of India is ‘Saree’. Since decades we have seen various forms of arts adorning on Indian saris. One such beautiful crafts by Indian weavers are “Patola fabrics”.

Patola is a Sanskrit word derived from “Pattakulla” which means finely dyed fabric, has become the queen of silks by its strikingly beautiful patterns and hues.

Patola, a double Ikkat weave or tie-dye weave of finest hand-woven fabrics with characteristics such as higher denser quality, durability, breathability, fine textures, and softness as parameters is renowned of its decency and aristocracy. Patola is a traditional method of dyeing and weaving of fabrics involving careful calculations and precise execution.

Patola weaving is having its roots in Gujarat, which is the hub of creations. Gujarat is also famous for its innovative creations and textile printings. It is a belief that during 12th century, the Karnataka and Maharashtra weavers of Salvi cast chosen Gujarat as a hub with the intention of acquiring patronage of ‘Solanki Rajputs’, who ruling the Gujarat with Patan as Capital.

It is a belief that, Patola fabrics are found in the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is also said that these were once worn only by the women of royal and rich families.

Patola is originally an ancient traditional weaving technique of Orissa. So Patola fabrics are also comes from Orissa, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and other popular states.

Patola weaving is two types: Rajkot Patola and Patan Patola. Rajkot and Patan in Northern Gujarat are the main centres for manufacturing of Patola fabrics. Tie & dye or double Ikkat technique basically differs from fabric to fabric based on patterns.

Ikkat is designed with mind-blowing colour schemes, geometrical and floral designs with furnishing shades for elegant cotton and silk fabrics. Because, the dyes used in this process are made from vegetable extracts and other natural hues.

In handy silk Patola, weavers use a special technique. Here, a raw silk is used to weave the Patola fabric. To prevent displacing or entangling, they specially secure the design and patterns. Complicated motifs are used same on the either side of fabric.

Earlier, leaf design, jewel square, parrot & elephant design, women & elephant design, basket design are the major Patola designs. Sometimes the patterns are also preferred by vohra muslins according to the design. Based on today facts, many designs came into existence.

Patola fabrics are well-known for their flaming bright colours and geometric designs with folk motifs that are apt for the family gatherings and festivals. Patola saris with motifs like birds, flowers, animals, fruits, trees and human figures looks professional. The designer embroidery salwars of Rajkot Patola are especially made for bridal and wedding collections. Kundans and sequence works on the Rajkot Patola Saris are most preferable functional and occasional wears.

The weavers of Patola wove an exclusive pattern with great precision. Today, Patola fabrics are reflecting the legacy of Gujarat.
