"A major part of my work involves consulting on and installing green energy systems. I never thought that the alternative sources of energy would be such a big hit until I started working. I'm now proud of my decision of studying energy engineering because I'm in a better position to help clients than my other colleagues." Mark says. Mark enrolled in Centennial College's two-year diploma program in energy systems engineering technician in 2010. Though his parents tried to convince him to study computer science but he was keen in becoming a part of ever-growing green energy market. "This program helped me a lot in understanding the society's concern regarding energy production, need for green or renewable energy sources, climate change mitigation and various energy systems. The best part is that it was a hands-on program where I learnt to design, assemble and program automation systems, operate power plants, design and maintain heating, cooling and ventilating units and implement energy solutions for commercial and residential buildings." Mark says further. Currently working as an energy technician with a construction company, Mark is responsible for integrating energy technologies into the latest green buildings. His entire team is dedicated to install green energy systems in commercial and residential units that are under construction. On asking why he chose a career in energy systems, he gives us a few points that are worth mentioning here. Take a look at what he says: 1. Green Energy Solutions Are the Future. Given the popularity of renewable energy, even in its infancy, it's not difficult to say how crucial a role it's going to play in future. Not only governments across the world are promoting alternative energy sources but organizations are also taking initiatives for sustainable green energy production. 2. Common People Are Also Installing Green Energy Solutions in Their Houses. Even common people understand how environmentally-safe and cost-effective green energy solutions. They can quickly bring down their power bills by using solar panels for energy production. This particular energy solution is very popular among them. Wind power is following the suit. So, practically you'll have more customers in future. And more customers mean more business. 3. You Have an Opportunity to Drive Change. As an energy systems technician, you get to become a part of the change. The need of the hour is to limit our dependence on non-renewable sources of energy and develop ways and means to harness renewable energy sources. It's we who drive change by convincing our clients to install green energy solutions in their households and offices. 4. You Get to Work on new Systems. The whole world knows that green energy is in its infancy and is still evolving. Everyday there is something new on the market that claims to consume less energy or run on alternative energy source. The job is not monotonous as you get to work on different systems, devices and equipment. Energy engineering is not a new field. However, its importance is recently recognised. And you can benefit from it when it comes to your career.
