Varicose veins are raised, large, swollen blood vessels that typically occur in the legs. These veins can twist and turn and, as a result, they can become unsightly as well as painful. After three to six weeks, the swelling gradually will start to disappear. This option is simple, relatively inexpensive and can be performed in an outpatient setting. 4. Endovenous laser treatment Performed under a local anesthesia in an outpatient setting, endovenous laser treatment is also an option. During the procedure, a small laser fiber is inserted into the affected veins. Laser light pulses are delivered inside of the vein, causing the swelling to go down making the varicose area much less noticeable. 5. Radiofrequency occlusion This occurs when a small catheter is inserted into the affected area. The catheter delivers radiofrequency energy to the area which causes it to heat, collapse and become sealed shut. This procedure is generally outpatient and can be performed under local anesthesia at your request. Procedures can be considered elective or medically necessary. Not all with this condition experience pain. For some, the procedures are merely performed because patients are uncomfortable with their appearance. With a number of different ways to treat this condition, it is best to consult your physician. Your physician can refer you to a specialist and can determine the best treatment option for you based on the severity. Before having your procedure, it is important to realize that it may not be covered by insurance. Not all insurances consider varicose vein treatments necessary. Treatments can still be performed, but you will need to pay for them out of pocket. They are often covered under insurance if your doctor deems it medically necessary.
