5 Energy Savings Myths and How to Really Cut Costs

Home Repair

Your heating and cooling systems are responsible for enormous utility costs on your part, including electricity and gas. Every time you receive your utility bill, you may be shocked. You may even look for any corners you can cut to lower your fees. There are some effective and easy ways to save energy in your home or business, such as turning off lights in unused rooms, switching to efficient light bulbs, and turning off power strips so that computers, stereos, and televisions do not continue to waste energy while they are unused.

Another major way to chip away at your monthly utility costs is to invest in HVAC system repair in Roswell. After all, a dusty, clogged, or otherwise inefficient heater or air conditioner could be costing you hundreds of dollars every year! Any heating and cooling expert will tell you that a tune-up can make a huge difference in your utility costs.

What follows are some rumored heating and cooling tricks that do not actually affect your energy costs.

Leaving Fans On

When you leave all of your ceiling fans on all day, they will continuously cool your home, which decreases your need for air conditioning, right? You could turn up your thermostat to a higher temperature, right? Wrong. Leaving your fans on, especially while you are away from home, is a huge waste of energy. While your fan can cool your home enough to let you cut your A/C some slack, the difference is not enough to warrant overusing ceiling fans or other fans.

Closing Vents

It almost makes perfect sense: you are leaving the room or do not use a room often, why not close the vents in the room when you go? Your daughter moved out; why not close the vents in her room? Actually, this is not a good idea. The backpressure of air that must be redirected to other vents, bounces back from closed vents, or leaks into your duct system actually forces your A/C to work much harder. The fan that blows air through your vents can wear out faster, meaning more long-term costs than savings.

Setting Temperatures High to Heat Your Home Faster

Many homeowners believe that the higher you set your heater, the faster it will heat your home to a comfortable temperature. They believe that the heater kicks into high gear when you set it well above your preferred temperature setting. They also believe that they can simply turn off the heater or change the setting once you feel comfortable. Actually, all of this is completely untrue. When a heater turns on, it works at maximum power, no matter how much higher your target temperature is than the current temperature. Setting the temperature too high actually increases the running time of your heater, delays it from turning off, and can result in uncomfortably high temperatures.

Instead of any of the above bogus tricks, save energy costs with a proven method: invest in HVAC system repair in Roswell. Heating and cooling service experts can identify any flaws in your system that are making it inefficient and potentially raising your utility costs. They can then repair these problems and save you money in the long run.
