Have we got your attention? Did you know that in South America you can have Christmas by the pool? Yes, it’s true. In the Southern Hemisphere, while we Northern Hemisphere folks are shivering in the cold winter, our neighbors to the way south are enjoying tropical temperatures and summer heat. Yes, Christmas in South America is very different. However, in one respect, it resembles North American Christmas. Families decorate their houses often using fake snow to emulate the Christmas-y season. South American families tend to use plastic trees and must replace them every seven years or they believe they’ll suffer bad luck. Nowhere else is that belief more prevalent than in Argentina. South American children refer to Santa Claus as “Papa Noel”, “San Nicolas”, “Viejito Pascuero” and “el gordo de Navidad.” “Navidad” is Spanish for Christmas. In Brazil, it’s “Natal” On Christmas Eve (“Noche Buena” in Spanish, “Noite Feliz” in Portuguese), Christmas pool parties are held at various homes. It’s not unnatural for folks to get out their swimming gear and go swimming on these special days. To us, it seems odd, but, to them, it’s just tradition. After the pool party, many South Americans go to Church to celebrate the birth of Christ as Catholicism is still the main religion in the area. They will then go back home after mass, which usually takes place at midnight and enjoy a meal with their families. South Americans like to party and will often host fireworks after the meal to welcome the holiday. On December 25th, many families will again flock to the pool for some refreshing holiday swims. This process will repeat on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The holiday season in the Southern Hemisphere is spent around the pool or at the beach because it’s so hot. Isn’t that neat?
