1. Using Thermal Diffusion Surface Transformation to Increase Die Life
October 07, 2013
After my presentation at the NADCA Die Casting Congress & Tabletop September 18, 2013 in Louisville, KY I talked to Prolong engineers about the big increase in die life possible when using Thermal Diffusion Surface Technology.
What is Die Life? Dies are made of hot work tool steel which w...

2. How to Compare Fluid and Heat Flow Simulation Software
January 06, 2013
Imagine you are working in a die casting operation and the discussion comes up to invest in fluid and heat flow simulation software and you are the lucky guy to pick the right software to buy. Fortunately there are not so many suppliers on the market and it is easy to get a first impression on the...

3. Die Temperature Challenge
April 20, 2012
Die Temperature Challenge
Lymburg Enterprises, LLC shows a nice little game at their web site. Based on the die caster’s challenge to keep the production die on a stable temperature profile this little applet simulates this doing and offers everybody the opportunity to improve his/her skills...

4. Process Parameter in High Pressure Die casting
January 23, 2012
“when the plunger moves we can’t do anything anymore”, “during fast shot we can accelerate and decelerate the plunger up to 5 times”, “when we have good castings we make a temperature image and measure the plunger speeds. If we get quality issues we just go back what we documented to make good casti...

5. Have Fun
December 05, 2011
You are a die caster coming close to the holidays, your plant is shut down and you have time to think about something else than production numbers, casting quality, break downs or process engineering. At these times when thoughts are far away of the daily challenges sometimes you find solutions in...

6. Autonomic Optimization in High Pressure Die Casting - Simulation Was Yesterday
January 12, 2011
Over thousands of years, foundry technology did not change much until the dawn of the computer age. Electronics allow building fully automatic production processes with handling robots and monitoring systems, increasing quality and productivity by reducing hard working labor forces. With autonomous ...

7. High Pressure Die Casting Industry in Need of Young Engineers
January 12, 2011
Foundry and high pressure die casting manufacturing are threatened by the phenomenon of “old dogs” leaving the industry into retirement. For young engineers entering this industry opportunities are unlimited. In the next years openings from machine operator to plant manager have to be filled. ...

8. Vacuum Sucks
January 27, 2010
In high pressure die casting, porosity is created by solidifying melt, which occupies less volume than liquid and due to entrapped air, which can’t escape during cavity filling. The solution to avoiding entrapped air is to push it out of the mould. If this can’t be done, engineers try to reduce the ...

9. My Die Spits at Me
January 13, 2010
My Die Spits at Me
Everyone who has worked in high pressure die casting has experienced this habit. The plunger starts pushing melt into the cavity - then suddenly a loud bang and a dust of liquid particles rains to the ground. After some seconds the mould opens and a half empty casting appe...

10. Autonomous Design and Process Optimization of a High Pressure Die Casting Table Base
August 04, 2009
ABSTRACT Engineering groups of AALLIED Die Casting Company of Illinois, USA, and MAGMA Foundry Technologies, Inc, USA, used state of the art autonomous optimization process simulation software, MAGMASOFT®, to design a die casting process for a large die cast aluminum table base. The die lay...
