The State Department refused to comment on whether it was providingthe Chen family with protection. Mr Chen, who helped exposed the forced abortions carried out underChina's one-child policy, had been held prisoner in his own homefor nearly 20 months before escaping on April 22 and making his wayto the US Embassy. After initially saying he wanted to stay in China, he changed hismind and asked to come to the US, beseeching the help of HillaryClinton and making two dramatic calls to a Congressional hearing inWashington. While China has accused the US of meddling in its internal affairs,authorities are thought to be pleased to have Mr Chen out of thecountry, in the hope it will reduce his impact as a dissident.
