Regular exercise is crucial to your health. Period. Exercise yields the greatest benefit when it is part of a regular routine. It's a cumulative effect thing. And, you can't count your typical everday activity (e.g. walking up stairs). It must be a focused activity (or set of activities) done for a specified amount of time with a specific goal or target. Some people genuinely cannot afford to join a gym and need to find a way to get an adequate workout at home with limited resources. So here is a list of effective exercises that can be done for a half hour, three days a week--and with fairly inexpensive equipment. 1) Walking. Thats right, just walk. Establish a set time, a few days a week when you can go for a walk. The cumulative effect of walking a little more each day can provide a tremendous boost to your metabolism and cardiovascular health. 2) Jump rope. A quality jump rope will cost less than $20. Jumping rope 5 - 10 minutes, three or four times a week is an excellent calorie burner and will also build up coordination and endurance. 3) Pull ups. If the king of leg workouts is the squat, then pull ups are the king of upper body workouts. The only piece of equipment necessary is an adjustable bar which can be found at the sporting goods retailers or even at Wal Mart or Target. In the beginning you might be able to do only one or two at a time (proper form is important). Set a goal of doing 3 or 4 sets of six repetitions. It'll doubtless take a few months to get to that point. 4) Crunches. Doesn't make a difference if you label them crunches or sit ups, just make sure that you concentrate on a compact range of motion and that you are flexing your abdominal muscles--not hurting your lower back or neck. It is advisable to use a mat or a carpet for crunches. Practice a focused, controlled movement that doesn't put undue stress on your body which can lead to injury. 5) Resistance bands. Ultra-portable and versatile, you can workout virtually every muscle group in your body without a universal machine or free weights.
