You might already have a skin care regimen, but take a step back from the sink for a moment and ask yourself, is it working? We wash, tone and moisturize, but there's always something to learn when it comes to caring for our skin. We can never know enough skin care advice. I recently caught up with two well-known dermatologists to get some skin care 411. Now, put your best face forward! Woman with Glowing Skin The recipe for no breakouts “Beautiful skin starts within,” says Heidi Casler, owner of The Yacht Club Salon in Arvada, CO. “Clear skin starts with a good diet, drinking plenty of water and stocking up on healthy Omega 3's.” Eat salmon, flax seeds and walnuts. By doing this, you’ll help keep skin cells moist and strong. Products make a difference Casler also attests that what you put on your skin matters. “To minimize breakouts, use good skin care products that are formulated specifically for your skin type,” she points out. “Make sure that your products are as ‘pure’ as possible, which means they shouldn’t have fillers.” Casler recommends Dermalogica for both the face and body. Use mineral makeup For Casler, this is a must! “Mineral makeup allows your skin to breathe, which helps reduce clogging of pores and reduces breakouts,” she explains. “Conventional cosmetics ‘mask’ your skin, causing more skin problems.” Casler’s favorite brand at the moment is Glo Cosmetics. They have a great selection and positive user reviews. Don’t forget to exfoliate Casler also stresses the importance of exfoliation. “Use A.H.A. (alpha hydroxy acid) cleansers or body scrubs to get rid of clogging and dulling skin cells,” she asserts. “Skin will be more radiant and less prone to breakouts if you follow an exfoliating regimen.” Her favorite exfoliators are Sanitas Active Body Wash and Dermalogica’s Exfoliating Body Scrub. Gadgets go a long way Some might have some odd gimmicks, but there are a few new tools out there on the market that really do work! For instance, Casler is a fan of the Clarisonic Plus Brush for your face AND body. The battery-operated product uses sonic frequency to clean your skin. “This means it removes more makeup, exfoliates, and cleanses your skin so well that all your products absorb better,” she explains. “[Using this will lead to] fewer face and body breakouts.” Some lip action Don’t forget about your kissable lips! (And, yes, let’s try to keep them kissable!) “The lips lack the same amount of melanin found in the rest of our skin, so there is less natural protection against the environmental elements to start off with,” according to Dr. Erin Welch, a dermatologist at Dermatology Consultants in Denver, CO. “The skin on the lips is also super thin and fragile, making caring for them on a regular basis very important.” Don’t forget the balm! She recently teamed up with Dove to create a spa treatment called, PitiCure. This new three-step treatment utilizes exfoliating techniques and can be followed by using Dove’s new Visibly Smooth Anti-Perspirant/Deodorant. “Regular exfoliation and cleansing of the underarm removes dead skin that can trap impurities and prevent irritation to keep underarm skin healthy,” says Dr. Luftman.
