Fundraising is a necessary part of any non-profit organization. Without the revenue it generates, these groups would not be able to perform the philanthropic or charitable function they were meant to do. Who mainly contributes to these organizations? Who or what should fundraisers target when attempting to raise much-needed revenue? Federal, State or Local Government These branches of the government often grant monies to programs operated by nonprofit organizations, especially programs dealing with human services, health, public education and higher learning institutions. Federal grants can be found at the website www.Grants.gov. Corporations Corporations are consistent and usually generous contributors to non-profit fundraisers. By donating large amounts of money to a certain fundraiser, they get publicity, free advertising for their company and respect from the community. Utilizing corporate funding is a viable way to start new projects that may need extra funding and support. Community Foundations Community Foundations are formed by members of a community who collect donations which are used to the benefit of their area. They award scholarships, certificates and also give to fundraisers they deem applicable to their foundation. Continuous Financial Support Fundraising should not just focus on episodic solicitation of donations. A non-profit company should always attempt to garner ongoing donations from these various groups in order to reduce the financial instability of their organization. Door to door sales can generate funds from individuals also, which is what the Girl Scouts do with their cookies every year. One of the biggest non-profit sellers of merchandise is Goodwill Industries, with over hundreds of stores located all over the United States. When approaching prospective donors during your fundraiser, have a detailed summary of what your organization has accomplished or plans on accomplishing. Since these corporations and grant providers deal with thousands of other non-profit organizations every year, only the most relevant and effective nonprofits will receive attention and consideration. Make sure you and your organization have a comprehensive understanding of the area in which you operate and can show the potential donors that you have a compelling solution to the problem you are servicing.
