Depressions affects thousands of people worldwide. For some people it can be very debilitating, because once a person is in the funk there seems to be no way out. Many people find relief from anti-depressants. However, a lot of people do not like them since they tend to make their world muted. If you are suffering from depression you might want to turn to nature's medicine cabinet before you try out the more expensive route of pharmaceuticals. Exercise releases endorphins, which in turn improves a person's mood and can prevent depression. How Exercise Releases Endorphins Now, exercise releases endorphins may sound like one of those too good to be true things, but it is not. The way exercise releases endorphins works is that when a person exercises it decreases the stress hormone known as cortisol while increasing ones endorphins. Endorphins are a hormone-like substance which are produced in the brain. They serve as a natural painkiller. After a person exercises they feel good because exercise releases endorphins and elevates their mood. It is completely natural from time-to-time to feel depressed. It happens to even the cheeriest of people. Sometimes it is brought on by a tragedy in their life. Life is not all sunshine and roses, but the more you exercise the faster you recover from mild depression, because exercise release endorphins. Even chronic depression can be helped because it also releases dopamine, serotonin, and adrenaline. All of these, when combined, combat the blues. This is a much way to deal with the problem then taking pills. Once a person stops taking anti-depressants they instantly become depressed. How Long Does it Take It is not as if you have to make a huge time commitment for your exercise to release endorphins. With as little as ten minutes of activity it will happen. Not just any activity will do. It should be something vigorous like a cardiovascular or aerobic activity. However, for optimal mental and physical health it is recommended to do moderate exercise thirty minutes per day. Improved self-image and self-esteem also happens when exercise releases endorphins. An apple a day will keep the Dr. away, but so will some good old fashioned calisthenics! Thanks for reading... Stay Fit After Baby!
