No matter how old you are, art has always been your passion. In fact, you've often sketched cartoons and slogans that you thought would work well for a specific company. Instead of simply dreaming about a vocation in this field, start finding an avenue toward success. High School Elective Classes If you are still in high school, then it's wise to begin preparing for your future now. Chances are, your school has some graphic designer elective courses or at least classes that contain similar material. Even if it does not, you could look into enrolling in a summer course at the local community college to start working on your skills. These classes will help you develop your skills and learn if graphic design is really the field you want to be in. A College Degree In order to be a graphic designer in the 21st century, you're going to need a college degree. Most employers are looking for such a degree when they go through the list of potential candidates. In fact, if you do not have one, you might be automatically eliminated by certain applicant software programs. Do you need a bachelor or masters degree to succeed in this field? Well, it really depends on what you specifically want to do. Try to narrow down the field a bit, and you can talk to a graphic designer or two who works in that specific discipline to determine what your best course of action would be. Internship Experience Employers also want to see that you have some practical experience in the field. Generally, when you attend college, the school will help to set up some internship opportunities for you. Be sure to take advantage of them. You should always research the internships available before enrolling in any college. In the event that no opportunities are presented, you can generally find internships on your own through a variety of Internet sources. Be advised that internships usually do not pay. The reward is that you are getting actual experience in the field and making contact with people who work as a graphic designer and in other related industries. Of course, once you have secured the educational and personal experience, you'll need to begin seeking out jobs. Fortunately, since you have these two tools in your bag, you will be able to scout out some jobs that are really the right fit for you.
