Is Diabetes Reversible?

Health,Fitness
There’s no denying that diabetes cases are on the rise. It’s scary to know that even children are getting diabetes or pre-diabetic. Years ago that would be unheard of but now it’s a sad fact. It’s a massive problem but it doesn’t have to be that way? In almost every case diabetes can be prevented or reversed with the right lifestyle changes as long as conventional treatment doesn’t cause too much damage first. Here’s the real cause and what you can do about it.

What Really Causes Diabetes?

The fact that all forms of diabetes have increased so dramatically proves that diabetes is not primarily caused by genetics, but rather lifestyle choices. As a whole, we’re eating more unhealthy carbohydrates and sugar while moving less. That’s a recipe for disaster. Excess carbohydrates and a lack of movement leads to insulin resistance. When insulin and leptin levels (a hormone that affects appetite) are chronically elevated, leptin signalling is disrupted. This affects blood sugar levels, which are what doctors look at to provide a diagnosis of diabetes. By providing prescribed medication to alter blood sugar levels, doctors are simply putting a band-aid on the real problem – insulin resistance.

The Problem with Conventional Treatment

Conventional medicine treats diabetes by giving more insulin. When you have type 2 diabetes, your pancreas is often producing too much insulin to begin with. However, instead of making its way to your cells where sugar is actually needed, it ends up in your blood stream and increases blood sugar levels. The problem with giving more insulin is that it doesn’t solve the problem, it makes it worse. Studies are now showing that type 2 diabetics treated with insulin are also being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, an insulin-dependent type of diabetes that’s also an autoimmune disease. Once type 1 diabetes sets in, there’s little you can do to turn back.

Beyond Diabetes

Research is also showing that there is a close connection between Alzheimer’s, glaucoma and diet. Insulin is responsible for more than just regulating your blood sugar. When you develop insulin resistance, the neurotransmitters in your brain cannot be properly regulated and your mental abilities can be impacted. Additionally, when your body is constantly trying to process excess fructose, it has little time to produce cholesterol. Despite what we’ve been told about cholesterol, it is absolutely critical to brain health because your brain runs on fats. Insufficient cholesterol levels affect everything from memory to mood. Glaucoma has been linked to these same problems because it is a neurodegenerative disease as well. Both Alzheimer’s and glaucoma are now being called diabetes of the brain.

How to Prevent and Reverse Diabetes

Prevention is your goal but if you have diabetes, you can still apply these principles in an effort to reverse it.

More fresh whole foods - Reduce the amount of processed food and packaged foods while focusing on nutrient dense fruits and vegetables. Minimise grains and other high carbohydrate foods. Increase healthy fats - Replace high carbohydrate and starchy foods with healthy fats like avocados and nuts. High quality protein - Low to moderate amounts of animal protein from organic and pastured animals benefits both your brain and your body. Maintain healthy vitamin D level - Have your vitamin D levels checked regularly. If you’re not able to get enough from sun exposure consider incorporating a vitamin D supplement. Exercise - It helps you maintain a healthy weight which reduces your risk of diabetes. It also increases insulin sensitivity, which helps your body continue to use insulin properly. Sleep - Aim for 7-8 hours of high quality sleep. Too much or too little sleep can lead to insulin and leptin resistance and increase your risk of diabetes.
