It is also a great confidence booster to feel that way. And YES, you should be confident because YES, you do have the talent. Talent is highly overrated btw. Some of the greatest minds the world has ever known, including Einstein and Edison, have claimed before that it is only 1% talent and 99% hard work. (or 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration). Even J.S. Bach, considered one of the top 3 greatest composers who ever lived, supposedly is known to have said that it is not genius, but constant reworking, revising and rewriting that gets his music to the level it is known for. Author Daniel Coyle, in his book “The Talent Code” even claims that talent does not exist. The book is very inspiring and motivating because it puts things in the right perspective. It teaches you that you CAN achieve anything you want to, if you follow a couple of simple principles. The main gist of the book is that, if you are passionate about something, and you spend enough time on developing the necessary skills, under the guidance of a great coach, then you will become a master at whatever that something is. In other words: yes, you can become as good at guitar as you would like to. Yes you can get to the level where you will wow your friends, loved ones, family, girlfriend or boyfriend IN NO TIME AT ALL. And yes, you will achieve that much more quickly through regular lessons. And no: “talent” does not have anything to do with it. Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers, comes to the very same conclusions. He studied top-level athletes, business people, rock stars, musicians and other wealthy or successful entrepreneurs. Gladwell found that there were a limited, specific set of circumstances and techniques that had brought all those successful people to their amazing accomplishments. His extensive research leads to the conclusion that “genius” and "talent" do not exist. As a result: whatever results or accomplishments The Beatles or Mozart are known for, you could be known for too.
