I once picked up and read a book called The Fifth Risk by Michael Lewis. It basically gives you an insider on what went on during the transition of Trump’s presidency. Specifically, it zooms in on three government agencies: The Department of Energy, Agriculture, and Commerce. Did I want to read this simply for pleasure? No, it was a book I was kind of forced to read, but it was still interesting nonetheless. One of the more memorable parts of the book was the final chapter where it focused on the Department of Commerce. It mainly talked about the weather industry, which I didn’t know much about at the time. If I remember the reading correctly, the way it works is this… The National Weather Service collects weather forecasting data and allows everyone to access that information. Private weather companies can take that information and use it to provide their own services to their clients. For example: The Climate Corporation, an agriculture company, uses the public weather forecasting data to provide what is essentially consulting services to farmers. They guide them on the best times they should plant their seeds, use their fertilizer, and harvest. Pretty neat service, in my opinion. Saves farmers barn-loads of money Similarly, the Internet is a place where you can find a vast amount of public information.
