A Dedicated Remote Employee Is A Boon For SMEs In Recession


Somewhere between the large corporations who equate outsourcing to India with offshoring and the small companies who outsource mere projects, are trapped the hundreds of Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) for whom neither option is suitable or financially viable. If SMEs need to extract the maximum benefits from outsourcing solutions, what they ideally need is easy and quick access to affordable, highly skilled professionals who would work with them on a long term basis. More so, during a recession. In other words, they need a virtual employee.

Outsourcing during an economic meltdown is perhaps one of the safest business investments there can be. The benefits of outsourcing remain the same, whether the economic climate is that of abundance or recession, except that during an economic slowdown, these benefits get more accentuated.

A dedicated, 'customized' virtual employee is tailor-made to meet the SME's outsourcing demand during a recession

It isn't without reason that India has emerged as a giant in the burgeoning outsourcing market. India has one of the highest literacy rates in the world. Each year, close to 3.1 million Indians graduate in various disciplines, creating an enormous talent pool of special skills. One can easily outsource any office work, from content writing to software programming, from accounting to legal work, to India. Best of all, from a freelancer to a dedicated full-time 'remote employee', the Indian outsourcing market allows you to outsource to the vendor who suits your business requirements the best.

Why a virtual employee would work and a freelancer would fail for an SME

  1. With a virtual employee, SMEs get to choose who works for them. A virtual employee comes to an SME, after passing through several screening processes. The outsourcing service provider, with whom the SME has entered into a contract, doesn't just thrust the first available candidate on their list onto them. The SME is involved very closely with the entire recruitment process, right from screening resumes to finalising who will ultimately work for the company.
    With a freelancer, it can be a hit-and-miss affair. There are so many freelancers for hire all over the internet that it becomes a daunting task to pick and choose the best of the lot. An average SME wouldn't have that kind of time anyway. Since the SME has only the freelancer's own credentials to go upon, there is little scope for running a thorough background check.

  2. A virtual employee works exclusively for the SME unlike a freelancer who often handles multiple clients and multiple projects at the same time. This, in fact, is the biggest advantage of working with a remote employee because all their energies and efforts are concentrated on your work.

  3. A virtual employee works full-time whereas a freelancer is almost invariably hired for short-term projects. A full-time employee does away with the rather tedious exercise of repeatedly contracting with different freelancers at different points of time. In addition, the SME gets to choose the working hours of its remote employee - the work shift could match that of the organisation; it could be overlapping; or it could be diametrically different.

  4. The best part of hiring a virtual employee is that the SME not just gets a cost-effective outsourcing solution, it also enjoys the advantages of having its own offshore 'office' in India. The outsourcing service vendor's office in functions like its own office, and takes care of all the logistic such as hardware, infrastructure and other nitty-gritty involved in the day-to-day functioning of an office. The virtual employee will be monitored by HR executives at all times and enjoy a 24x7 IT support.

Therefore, when an SME outsources with a reputed offshore outsourcing vendor in India and works with a virtual employee as opposed to a freelancer, it stands a better chance at battling recession.
