City of Belozyorsk is the regional center of the Vologda region, one of the oldest cities in Russia (first it was mentioned in 862). The population is about 12,000 people. In ancient times it is the capital of the principality Belozersky (1238-1370). How to get there You can get there by trains to Vologda, Arkhangelsk or Vorkuta departing from Moscow to Yaroslavl station, departing from Moscow in the evening, to the Vologda station. In Vologda, you should go to the bus station (which is located near the train station) and take the bus to Belozyorsk (about 2 departures per day, 3 hours away). You also may achieve Belozyorsk by trains going in Vologda, Arkhangelsk, Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk or Vorkuta station Cherepovets from St. Petersburg to Moscow railway station (about 9 hours of travel, 2-5 departures a day). It’s convenient to use the trains coming out of St. Petersburg in the evening. In Cherepovets you should go to the bus station (it is located near the railway station building) and take the bus to Belozyorsk (4 on the day of departure, journey time - 2 hours 30 minutes). You can stay in a hotel located in the heart of the city. I recommend staying in the city a day or two. Not because of the fact that there are many points of interest in the city (a few hours will be enough for sightseeing), but in order to feel the flavor of this ancient city, leading its leisurely life. Belozyorsk is a city of wooden fairy tale Belozyorsk is located on the shore of Lake White, who gave the town its name. Slavs often based their settlement on the banks of the lake – it is a long-standing habit of Slavs. Many cities, leading its history since antiquity, are located just at the lakes. White Lake, moreover, is special one. Through it a trade route passed connecting the north (Karelia) and the Novgorod lands with the Volga region, Central Russia and the towns along the Sukhona and the Northern Dvina. The city center consists of an ancient fortress and the Soviet Avenue - the center of the "business and commercial activity." Strictly speaking, from the ancient fortress only shaft and the moat remained. The city is built up mainly from wooden pre-war and even pre-revolutionary buildings. The stone architecture is mainly represented by churches, shopping arcade, and the mansions in the center of the city. The town is separated from the lake by a canal that runs along the whole coast, which gives a special flavor to this part of the city. It should be noted the high preservation of ancient monuments and old north huts of Belozyorsk. Neighborhood of the city - it is a flat lowland lakeside covered by forest, and in the lowlands by the swamp. The climate is continental. In winter, the average temperature is about 10°C (January), in the summer to 18°C. Snow cover is about 160 days. I would have gone to Belozyorsk in the winter. Russia in general, is "a winter country." Snow in Belozyorsk area in some years may lie five months of the year. No wonder, then, that the people for centuries adapted to living in such conditions, and built their houses in the calculation of the harsh and the long winter, more importantly, they kept their habits to this day.
