Attractions and landmarks of Vyborg are closely linked to its history. So, from the period of Swedish rule until today Vyborg Castle has been primarily preserved, built in 1293. The castle was built in the middle of the Strait of small rocky island about 1700 m long and 122 m wide. For centuries, the castle was rebuilt several times and supplemented with new stone buildings. From 1561 to 1564 the Olaf tower was rebuilt, its walls were thickened, height was reduced and it has evolved into a powerful 7-storey tower. In 1856, during the illuminations on the occasion of the opening of the Saimaa Canal, the Castle was badly damaged by fire, and after the restoration of 1891-1898, it gained that kind which has now. The height of the tower with a dome is 53 yd, maximum wall thickness is 5,5 yd, at the base of the dome there is an observation deck with a magnificent view of Vyborg. There is a museum at the castle now. At the end of the XV century the settlement, except the Island castle, was surrounded by a fortified wall with towers, of which only the City Hall tower survived to the present day (on the Vyborg Street). In 1490 the Clock Tower was built - the bell tower of the Cathedral (St. Serf. 5, in the yard). It was begun to name Clock Tower after 1753, at that time a clock with the battle was adjusted. For a long time, the Clock Tower served as a fire tower. After a fire in 1793 Catherine II gave the city an alarm bell with the inscription. The bell tower remained at the time to the present day. Near Vodnaya Zastava Str there is another monument of XVI century - Hyacinth Church. Between Vyborgskaya and Storozhevaya Str you can see the building of the XIV century - House of the merchant guild. From the ramparts built by the Swedes in 1550, a strong round tower remained, now it is in the center of Market Square, next to the building construction market in 1905. In 1564, construction of the Horned fortress began, as it was then known. Now only bastion Pantserlaks has been preserved, it is located at the corner of Vyborgskaya Str and Leningradsky Ave. On Krepostnaya Street, 13 (entrance from the Krasin Street) the 2-storey medieval building of the XVI century remained, built of cobblestone-like tower of the fortress wall. Nearby there are the interesting old buildings next to Progonnaya Street. Near the bay on Progonnaya Street the 2-story white stone house is with a balcony. On its rounded corner there is a plaque. In this house, in a hotel Motti at 1829, composer Mikhail Glinka stayed with friends, among them Anna Petrovna Kern was (in whose honor four years earlier Pushkin dedicated the poem "I remember a wonderful moment"). Memories of the breathtaking beauty of the northern landscape, the road among the rocks, forests and lakes, of the Finnish coachman songs were inspired by the composer to write "Finnish song," and ballads of Finn in the opera "Ruslan and Lyudmila".
