Adding new activities to your fitness regimen can be exciting and effective. Especially in the summer months, it’s great to get outside and soak up some vitamin D while getting closer to your goals. Beginning a biking and hiking routine in addition to your resistance training workouts can challenge your body in new ways and add variety that will keep you interested and motivated. If you are a novice cyclist that wants to begin a routine, as a personal trainer Portland Or, I recommend purchasing a cheap, used bike that is in good condition, a helmet, and a bike lock. A great way to add biking into your routine is to bike to places you would normally drive to. Do you live within a few miles of the grocery store? Or your workplace? Bike instead! This is a great way to get your body used to a bike and build some cardiovascular endurance and leg strength. Once you are used to the feel of cycling, you can start to up your mileage. Check out your local book store for a biker’s guide to find paved paths that are less than 20 miles total and relatively flat. Work these rides into your schedule, maybe on the weekend when you have time for a longer ride. Continue these flat rides for a month or two and when you feel like it’s getting easier you can find harder routes. Adding hills into your rides will increase the difficulty level significantly. Hiking is another fun activity that is great exercise. First, be sure you have good hiking shoes. Get some that are specifically for hiking or trail running. Start with short, easy hikes that are less than 3 miles round trip. These should be relatively flat with little elevation gain. Adding these small hikes in throughout the week is a great way to prepare for longer, more difficult hikes. Once you have several small hikes under your belt, bring a friend and hike something more than 3 miles with a slight elevation gain. Be sure to bring water and a snack on hikes and make sure someone knows where you’re hiking. Hiking and biking can both be added to a weekly routine in addition to your resistance training. Try resistance training twice a week, and hiking and biking short distances during the week. If you are having a challenging time, consult with a professional in your area or even better, a Portland Oregon personal trainer. On the weekends or days that you have more free time try to challenge yourself with the longer, more difficult hikes and bike paths.
