When you enter the gym, do you make an immediate right to the cardio machines, avoiding the weights altogether? Unfortunately, a personal trainer Portland knows there are far too many people who have been misinformed about weight training. Women for years have been told that if they lift heavy weights, they will get big and bulky. This has women second guessing themselves when they reach for 10 lbs. The truth is, women don't have enough testosterone in their body to achieve large, oversized muscles. Men on the other hand tend to reach for weights that are far too heavy. It takes them every bit of effort to pick up the weight and just bring it over to their bench. When lifting weights that too heavy to manage, there's no doubt there's a great risk for injury. So what is an appropriate weight to use? For both men and women alike, a personal trainer Portland Oregon would recommend a weight that allows you achieve a full set of reps, but still challenges you. For example, a set of 20 bicep curls is the goal to achieve. The weight you choose should allow you to complete those 20 reps, but the last 5-10 reps should be a challenge. Meaning, the reps start to get uncomfortable and your mental strength must take over to carry you to the end of the exercise. If you’re completing an exercise and the reps are consistently easy from beginning to end, you need to add more weight. If you’re not pushing your body, you’re not going to achieve the goals you set for yourself. On the opposite side of the spectrum, if it’s a struggle to get through the first few reps, your weight is too high. When the weight is more than you can handle, other muscle groups contribute and your form begins to suffer. Your workouts should challenge you, and the weights you choose to work with should do the same. Everyone has a decent judgment of what their body can handle, so leave your ego at home at put up what you can handle, and don’t be afraid to go for weight that will challenge your body. Just the right amount of stress is good for your body. Too much can cause harm and injury, leaving out of the gym for days, even weeks. As a personal trainer Portland would tell you, if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you. About the author: Kisar Dhillon – A Personal Fitness Trainer Portland, Oregon.
