Recovery is essential to getting the results you want. We put our bodies through a lot of stress day in and day out, both in work and in our workouts. A Personal trainer Portland can advise knowing and listening to your body, to know when you should take a break. Taking breaks doesn’t just pertain to spacing out your workouts in the week so that injury does not occur, but also taking a breather throughout your workout. There are usually two types of people that walk through our doors; those who want to be pushed non-stop, always moving and always going and the ones who welcome breaks with open arms and do their best to prolong their recovery time. What is important to understand in both situations is that there is a reason for recovery. Your recovery times are put in place so that your body has time to regroup and put forth its best effort for the exercises to come. If you’re going hard non-stop, leaving no time for breaks in between exercise, you’re going to exhaust your body. Those breaks are needed so that you don’t fatigue early on in the workout and run the risk of injuring yourself. Recovery times are usually set to a certain length to allow your body just enough time to recover, without letting your heart rate come all the way down. With most of our Portland personal trainers dealing with female clients, their goals are usually to lose weight and firm up. If their rest time is made too long, it defeats the purpose of designed fat burning workouts. Another option for recovery is something called active recovery. Active recovery involves performing an exercise in between sets that is low intensity, but still has the body maintaining movement. Some examples of this are jump roping, jumping jacks, side shuffles at a moderate pace, or step ups. These movements are not meant to be intense, but rather allow for the client to catch their breath while still being able to sustain a steady heart rate. Determining the correct recovery time involves knowing the needs of your body and how you are feeling at any given time during your workout. If you’re feeling light headed, short of breath, or fatigued, rest until your body feels well enough to continue exercise. Personal Trainers in Portland, Oregon believe workouts should be intense and time efficient, but above all else they should be safe.
