How to Make a Flash Drive Bootable in Ubuntu A bootable USB flash drive contains a complete instance of an operating system. Like a "Live CD," this allows you to access the operating system from any computer that can boot from a USB device. The difference between a Live CD and a bootable flash drive (other than the media) is that the flash drive can be configured to save your files, whereas a Live CD cannot. Ubuntu Linux users can create a bootable flash drive with the USB Startup Disk creator tool. Instructions 1 Open the "USB Startup Disk" creator tool. It wil be found under the "Administration" section of the main "System" menu. 2 Click the "Other" button and locate the ISO image that you want to use. If you don't have an ISO image, you can use the Ubuntu installation CD to make a bootable Ubuntu image. 3.Choose the flash drive that you want to use under the "USB disk to use:" section. 4 Choose whether you want to be able to save files created when using the operating system on the flash drive or if they should be discarded when the operating system is shutdown. If you want to be able to save the files, choose how much space should be reserved on the flash drive for the files. 5 Click the "Make Startup Disk" button to create the bootable flash drive. Tips & Warnings Linux can be installed on any flash drive that has at least 700 mg of storage space. Drives with faster access speeds will perform better than those with a slower speed.
