Some of my younger friends are at the point in their lives where they’re starting to focus on finding jobs. Out of all the stages of the job searching process, the interview is the most stressful part to most of them. And I can understand why. The pressure of talking to the very person who has the power to hire or reject you. The pressure of wanting to answer the interview questions perfectly. It can be a bit nerve-wracking. So whenever they come to talk to me about it, I always tell them the same thing. “It’s no more than just a conversation between two people. Just be you.” It’s probably something they’ve heard thousands of times already and don’t want to hear it anymore. But once you think of interviews like this, it suddenly doesn’t sound so bad. Plus it saves time for everyone. Think about it. Wouldn’t it be better to show the authentic you at the beginning and get hired (or rejected) than to pretend to be the perfect candidate and find who you really are later on and think you may not be the right fit after all? That’s the exact principle I carry when it comes to emails, and I believe how you should too. I’ll always write to you in my own style, my own voice, whether you’ve been a reader for a while or this is your first email from me. If you like it, cool.
