There’s no better day to talk about this than today, Election Day. I’m sitting inside, and just waiting for the potential chaos to unfold across the country. While that’s happening, I watched a video a friend of mine sent me talking about how to have a conversation. Sounds so simple and silly, but it’s amazing how many people don’t know how to do it. Take people in politics, for example. The video I watched described a typical political conversation very accurately. It’s almost always going to end up in two people talking at each other and refusing to listen. They always think the other person is wrong. That’s why I stay away from platforms like Twitter and had zero interest in watching the recent presidential debates. Listening to those kinds of conversations is almost no different than listening to someone who just wants to aggressively sell their products or services to a potential customer. It’s just not going to end well and drive the person away. So how do you avoid that? You start by listening to what they have to say. Listen to their problems, which is very similar to market research. Then make an effort to understand their problem. Make sure you completely get their situation. And then sell from the point of view of solving their problem. And if you do it this way through email, your wallet is going to thank you.
