Background checks are a part and parcel of the recruitment process. Organizations recruit employees after going through resumes and conducting interviews with the candidates who meet up organizational expectations. This is the most likely scenario. Some organizations conduct background check of employees prior to their joining the organization. There are existences of organizations that choose to conduct employee background screening once the employee is brought on board. Whatever be the scenario, background screening is followed by almost all the organizations and brings the process of background screening to completion. The background check mainly comprises of education, address, past employment, criminal record check, court record check, reference check and many more. These checks are considered as crucial in knowing all the information about the employee relevant to the organizational interest and which could have a direct impact on the dispensing of duties and responsibilities for the employee. Once an organization has conducted these checks for a particular employee and the reports or results reached at present a clean status of the employee, it is taken as final end result and saved in the enterprise records. Future is very dynamic in nature. It applies to the employees of an organization as well. The records of an employee which was saved after the process of background screening and which was positive is considered as the ultimate information. Change is the only constant thing in this world and hence, the employee records are also prone to change in the due course of time. An employee may change his/her residence but forget to get it updated in company records. This creates a gap between the real information and the perceived notion. Here the company will be at loss if under some emergency that employee is tried to be reached. If the employee commits and the company does not have the updated address it would be a pain for the organization. Another area subject to change is education of an employee. After spending a couple of years in the organization the employee could get an additional educational degree. If this degree causes any impact on the current job role, it needs to be in the company records.

Over a period of years the employee who was hired with a clean past could have started indulging in criminal activities. No organization would like to have a criminal working as an employee. Hence it is prudent on the organization’s part to look into the past of the employee even if the initial background check revealed the clean past of the employee. It will save the organization from possible legal implications in which the organization can be pulled in because of the employee with criminal background. Similarly an employee could have fallen prey to the habit of substance abuse which can cause an adverse impact on the behavior and work. Therefore organization should not stop with one time background check and conduct background check on the areas mentioned above on regular intervals to stay abreast with updated employee information.
