302. 3 Names I Don't Like to be Called!
February 18, 2013
We all have different names that we don’t like others to call us. For some reason, they don’t sound right, or they make us feel uncomfortable. I guess it’s similar to calling someone by their middle name, even though they’ve made it clear that they don’t like it. We do just to make life harder on them.
I would like to mention that I have officiated men’s college basketball for many years, which means that I’ve been called many things that are far from nice. However, that is a different setting. These hecklers don’t know me, and I don’t know them. In other words, they don’t care about me,... (read more)

303. Gravity: Bring It Down!
February 18, 2013
There are innumerable laws of nature planted to the totality of the planet Earth. Up until now, these laws have been treated with doubts and questions as clearly shown by the experimentation done by many genius scientists. A particular law that has invariably been put into controversy is the by-product of the law of relativity that made Albert Einstein an idol in the world of modern physics – gravity. Otherwise known as gravitation, it is a natural phenomenon which is defined by the attraction of physical bodies with a force proportional to their masses. We’re not talking about weight here as ... 308. Oh, Waiter
February 10, 2013
Five weeks ago I bought a gas burner, a silver pot, and a black wok. Opened up my own private restaurant. It's a real cozy little place. "Quaint" you might say—except that word makes me squirm. The setting is a bungalow verandah under the canopy of coconut palms astride Maenam Bay. It's a small restaurant—one table, two chairs. The name of the joint is "Joe's” and my name isn't. I'm the proprietor, chief purveyor, maitre ‘d, the chef, waiter, busboy, dishwasher, and so far the only customer. I like it. I like the whole set-up. Never have to wait for a table. Never any obnoxious ... (read more)

309. Fame to Shame
February 09, 2013
Picked up a magazine today with a cover story entitled, "So and So--Rock Climber, Meditator, Musician, Eccentric and New Age Billionaire." There's a full-color cover photograph of this so and so, and yes, he's dark, handsome and "imperially slim."
I haven't read the article yet, and I'm not sure I will. Actually, I'm not sure I should. Panegyric profiles of these sorts of people make me feel so downright mediocre. I mean, why couldn't he be just a good rock climber? That wouldn't bother me at all. The air has got to be a little thin in a guy's cabeza if scaling rocks is his idea of killi... (read more)

310. Who's Got Time for Fun?
February 08, 2013
Occasionally I write letters to a few of the very few people I remember from my previous career as an American. Less occasionally, some of them write back. After I've read their letters I'm always glad that they are where they are at, and I'm not. Most of them are married. Most of them have children. All but one of them have gobs more money than I do. Frank is the exception, who, like myself, is unmarried, has no children, and lives on an island. I live on this beautiful island in the Gulf of Siam, with a population of twenty thousand people and fifty million coconuts. Frank lives on... (read more)

313. Here are 10 Reasons to Turn Down a Job Offer
February 04, 2013
In some cases, we need to walk away from a job offer. I understand that money can be tight, but assuming a job that we don’t like can cause more problems than it solves. Here are 10 reasons to say “No” to a job offer: (1) When you interviewed, you felt some questions were answered vaguely, such as opportunities for growth. The hiring manager informed you that you will have your answers at the “right” time. You nod, but you are uneasy about the response. (2) During the lunch interview, you felt that management “coached” the invited participants how to act. They were going through ... (read more)

315. The Importance of Being Comical
January 31, 2013
Stand up comedians are granted a social license to say what we think but dare not say out loud. We love comedy because it recreates our experience of life and leaves us with the gift of laughter. Comedy holds up a mirror to the conversations that dominate our society and allows them to be.
Comedy allows us to poke fun at ourselves and to laugh at the intricate web of social norms that otherwise would remain unchallenged. We feel connected as our human foibles are exaggerated and parodied for us to see in their naked form.
We revel in the stories of human dysfunction in full flight. M... (read more)

319. Why a Broken Ironing Board is a Leadership Problem
January 28, 2013
It’s Monday morning, and I’m getting ready for several important meetings in the Los Angeles area. I selected a hotel right near the Orange County John Wayne airport because of its convenience. My morning was planned perfectly, including breakfast, a quick workout, and getting the wrinkles out of my clothes that come from packing in one’s luggage. I waited to do the ironing after showering, just before heading out the door. I know some of you are wondering why I didn’t iron the night before, and that is good advice. January 27, 2013
Everyone can make out the transition of technology from the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell to the smartphones of today. Sudden fact: Apple was not the inventor of the smartphone. It was IBM and the first ever considered smartphone was called Simon.
Going back to the topic at hand, these technologies are the results of the toils of genius masterminds in technology. The adage, “Great minds think alike,” is laid out by the tech titans given that their smartphones all look the same only differing with the specifications and operating systems. If this is true for great minds, so it is for ... (read more)

322. Classical Themes in Popular Entertainment.
January 25, 2013
Quite regularly, one is presented with a treatment of a significant episode from Greco-Roman history in popular entertainment, in the form of a novel or a film. This period was regularly visited a generation ago in such films as, “The 300 Spartans,” starring Richard Egan as the magnificent Spartan King, Leonidas. The popularity of such historical treatments waned for a number of years, but has had a rebirth in the last fifteen years or so.
This theatrical treatment produces something of a dilemma for the ordinary person who has an interest in the period. The book or film is often, though... (read more)

324. Office Toys and Horseplay in the Workplace
January 23, 2013
Don’t be fooled by the title. I’m not about to discourse on the merits and demerits of putting two men into a panto horse outfit and running amok in Tesco’s. No, sir! That was in protest over the horsemeat in beef burgers scandal, after all. Nor will I be making any reference to the donkey prostrated in the road in the apparent wake of a Google StreetView car in Africa. Said vehicle neatly snapped the animal in self-incriminating evidence which subsequently went viral globally. When I mean horseplay I just mean those innocent little distractions that remind us that even in the mids... (read more)

325. Six Annoying Driving Habits That Would Drive Us Crazy As A Passenger
January 21, 2013
Speaking as a perfectly sensible and law abiding driver (as we all think we are, right?), there’s nothing more infuriating than jumping into someone else’s car and being subjected to their odd, quirky and annoying driving habits.
Unfortunately, from time to time, we all have to take a back seat (literally) and be at the mercy of someone else’s driving (or lack of) ability. Whether it’s a taxi ride home or simply a lift from a friend, there is no getting away from these sporadic travel arrangements.
What makes these trips – both short and long – ever the more depressive is the driving... (read more)
